Best Boarding Schools in the USA: a Researched, Unranked Shortlist

An unranked shortlist of US boarding schools whose key facts, fees and accreditation records can be checked against official sources.

There is no single best boarding school. This page is not a league table: schools are not numbered or scored, they are listed alphabetically within each country, and no school paid to be included. Read the criteria and limitations before you rely on it.

Selection criteria

A campus is listed only if it meets all of these:

Boarding is confirmed on the school’s own page, and that page still contains the quoted statement when we re-check it.
The school publishes the ages or year groups it teaches (and, where it says so, the ages or years at which boarding starts).
A boarding fee total can be calculated from the school’s own published fees (an annual total, or a per-term total where the school does not state the number of terms), in one currency and academic year.
Admissions information is published: entry points, process, deadlines or an official admissions page.
An inspection report, or an accreditation, registration or inspection-regime record that is not a mere membership, is linked.

Limitations

“Best” depends on the child, so this page does not rank schools or claim any school is objectively the best. The shortlist reflects only how fully a school’s key facts can be checked; it says nothing about academic results, pastoral quality, safeguarding or fit. Schools are listed alphabetically within each country. Sponsorship and school-submitted information cannot add a school or change the order. Coverage of our research is incomplete, so a school missing here may simply not be researched yet. No acceptance rates, exam results, university destinations or parent reviews are used.

Independence

Sponsorship and school submissions never buy inclusion in, or the order of, a researched selection. Sponsored placements elsewhere on the site are labelled.
